Michael Dorsey is a waiter at a restaurant, but he used to be an actor two years ago. He has not acted since two years ago. Michael Dorsey went to his agent after hearing some news. He wanted to prove to his agent that he can get the role somehow. His agent did not believe him what so ever. What Michael Dorsey did correct was that he did not let anything stop him from getting a role. He dressed up like a woman and he went to the audition. Right before he could fully audition the actor/director told him no, that he was not right for the part.  “…working for the same company for a lifetime are long gone and in some industries having one job for a significant period of time is frowned upon rather than considered an asset.” Michael did not take no for an answer and he stood up for himself. He did not fail to show his disguise, he stayed in costume the whole time. Later on he showed his agent how he got the role and that he was able to achieve his goal in getting the role. “As unattainable as a dream job might sound, with the right amount of forethought and preparation, you can make the move...” What he possibly did wrong was that, instead of telling his female friend, the one who really wanted the role also, he lied to her and did not tell her about him getting the role. Sometimes to achieve your dream job you might need to go above and beyond for something you really want. And that is something that Michael did. To get a big role he had to dress up like a woman and he was able to get the role. “...to conduct a self-exploration and identify possible careers that truly inspire.”

Evaluation

Experience in my evaluation

“…staff may need to be trained, and new vendors may be required. Work schedule changes, new supervisory tactics, and new performance evaluation concerns may become important.”One of my very first evaluations, I was not too sure what to even expect for an evaluation. I remember one of my managers had a piece of paper and she told me to come with her and have a seat. I have never had an evaluation before but I have heard from other employees that if the evaluation goes well you receive a raise. I heard how some employee’s evaluations went well and how some evaluations have not gone so well. For my evaluation I remember you were being scored on certain categories depending on your job performances. You had the score of 1 being not so good and 5 being the best. I remember I got mostly all 4’s and one or two 3’s. My manager also told me all the great comments I had gotten and just one or two things that I could simply improve on. I was kind of expecting for a bigger raise, but I was content for my overall score. That was my first time experiencing an evaluation but maybe in the future other evaluations will be different.

Sexual Harassment in the NFL

Sexual Harassment in the NFL

I do not think it was the right thing to do to fire Mr. Rice. That is because what he had done had nothing to involve his job in. He did not cause the scene while on the job, whatever had happened, happened outside from the job. The NFL and the Ravens had handled the situation in a terrible way. From reporters and people who have seen the video they say that, “happened outside-when he was dragging her out unconscious-but inside” and that is what happened at the incident. “..the NFL, the Ravens and lots of others involved in this look even worse.” From what people are saying, it honestly does look like the NFL and the Ravens are just trying to save their own reputations. That is because from the incident it involves one of their team players and since it does not look good to the public it’ll make the NFL or the Raven’s reputation look bad. The Raven’s tried to help out their team player Ryan by taking him off indefinitely. “Rice should be allowed to play again, after he is suspended, his wife is free to do as she wants..” Rice should definitely be allowed to play for the NFL again because of his wrong doing that had nothing to do with the NFL. His incident did not involve the NFL or his team. The NFL and his team should not have gotten involved into the situation at all because it did not involve them whatsoever. The situation was between Ryan Rice and his wife Janay Rice. The situation just gave Ryan Rice a bad look in the public view, it may have given him a worse reputation but to his job it had nothing to with that. What Ryan Rice does while not playing or doing his job is his own business.

The Power Behind the Throne

The Power Behind the Throne

In this movie what went wrong throughout the beginning was that some employees seemed to have been favored for their looks and whereas others were not. The head guy in the company treated some employees differently from other employees. Violet had seniority over most employees that were with the company, instead of her getting a promotion, the promotion was given to someone else only because Mr. Hart said that a man needed to be in that position. I do not think that was a proper way to handle that situation. Training is a process that provides new and currently employed staff with the short- and longer-term knowledge and skills required to perform successfully on the job. There was a new employee that was in training, Violet who was a senior supervisor was the one to train the new employee. The new employee had to perform a task, she was overwhelmed and did not perform the task correctly so instead she got into trouble by Mr. Hart. training can be demonstrated by considering the extent to which knowledge and skills improve as a result of the training. What also went wrong was that Violet was able to come up with really great ideas for the company, but instead she was not the one who was being recognized for the ideas. managers are busy, and numerous responsibilities and tasks demand their ongoing attention. In the end, the ladies were able to show how they were able to provide and change for the company so that it could become a better workplace for the employees.

Minimum Wage

Minimum Wage

"The federal minimum wage provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009."  I believe that $7.25 is not enough for someone to live on. For someone to be able to support themselves or to support a family I do not think that $7.25 is enough to make hourly. "Many states also have minimum wage laws. Some state laws provide greater employee protections; employers must comply with both." If all states have the same minimum wage laws it would be fair to everyone. That way others know what it is like to be making only minimum wage. “38 states introduced minimum wage bills during the 2014 session; 34 states considered increases to the state minimum wage.” Having an increase to minimum wage bills can really have a big impact on society and also on a company. That is because the company might be losing some of their own money if they did that. The only way to make up for the loss would be to make higher sales, make possibly more sales, spend more money, or raise prices. Doing all of that, I believe that is only another way for the company to receive even more loss than they already have. Although raising minimum wage bills may seem like an excellent idea, it also might be not so excellent if it means having to lose money to give to their employers. Minimum wage laws would be helpful to have them be similar in every state, that way it is only fair to everyone. If minimum wage laws are different in one state, that might mean that the minimum wage is better in another state and might cause companies to lose some of their employees due to possible relocation.

This Charming Man

This Charming Man

From watching a small part of “This Charming Man” I was able to better understand how in some parts of the world there is discrimination. Whether it is discrimination towards someone’s name, how some may dress, or how they look and what they may be. In this video there was a man named Lars and he was a Danish guy, he had blonde hair and blue eyes. He was out of work for almost two years so it was very difficult for him to find a job. He went to a job center to get some help, but there was a mix up with paper work. Instead he ended up disguising himself as a Persian man and through that experience he was able to see how differently people were treated.  For example he would go to the bar as himself Lars, and he went to the bar as El Hassan with Ida and the bartender treated him a certain way. The bartender also brought up a few racists jokes, one about a Persian woman and her mustache. Also at the beginning Lars did not recognize Ida who was an old classmate, simply because she lost a lot of weight, and he also called the phone lady a peasant girl because she did not know what she was doing. “Recently employed staff must acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become proficient in their positions.” (172). In the video El Hassan was signed up for a Danish speaking class in order to have the qualities needed to find a job. “…acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become proficient in their positions” (172). Lars new how his classmate Omid had been refused several jobs and really needed a job, he knew some of his qualities and was able to help him find a job. “…culture of respect that begins with training experiences that yield staff members who have the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful on the job.”(172).

I think that a reason why National Lawyers Association NELA might sponsor Workplace Fairness because everyone has rights and if their employer is not treating them fairly they do have the right to an lawyer. They can get a lawyer in order to get be treated like everyone else.
On this site you can find your workplace rights for the 50 states, workplace news and also court decisions. “technology… has not generally affected the number of employees required to produce and deliver the products and services that guests desire”  (172).
“...more-experienced peers must obtain new knowledge and skills to keep up with an ever-changing workplace (172).”
This site is helpful with giving you tips for how to go about getting a job, getting fired or just getting started. It also provides information on the rights of a workplace. Hospitality managers can best address any of the issues by going onto the site because the site provides them with information that they may or may not already know.
“Training is important for all hospitality personnel because it is the best way to assure that staff members can make maximum contributions to the organization's success” (172).

This site can be very helpful and useful in finding the correct information when it comes to hiring or termination. It also provides information from benefits to unions to wages, and problems.
